SB 1160 reduced prospective UR requirements for some treatments during the first 30 days following a work-related injury for injuries occurring on or after January 1, 2018, with the goals of reducing administrative burden on providers and improving the timeliness and quality of care for injured workers. Drawing on data from (1) two large claims administrators, (2) the California Workers\u2019 Compensation Information System, and (3) the Independent Medical Review database, the authors assessed whether the law achieved its goals by analyzing UR approval and denial rates, patterns in receipt of guideline-concordant medical care, and time to treatment before and after the law\u2019s implementation. The findings and policy recommendations are intended to inform ongoing efforts by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and the broader workers\u2019 compensation community to refine and improve UR policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"full-bg-sand full-bg-bottom\">\n<div class=\"conducted\">\n<ul class=\"upc\">\n<li class=\"health c6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/health.html\">RAND Health<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sans small\">\n<p>This publication is part of the RAND research report series.
